How Nigeria's Electricity Bands Actually Affect Your Bill

If your electricity bill jumped recently and you don't fully understand why, the answer is probably your band. Honestly: most people only learn what "Band A" or "Band C" means after their tariff already changed.

What the bands actually are

NERC — the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission — classifies every customer into one of five bands, A through E, based on how many hours of supply your feeder line actually delivers. It's not about your house or how much power you use. It's about the specific feeder your DisCo (Ikeja Electric, EKEDC, AEDC, and so on) says serves your area.

Band A customers are promised 20+ hours of power a day, and pay the highest rate for it. Band E customers get as little as 4 hours a day, and pay the least. Bands B, C, and D sit in between, both in hours promised and price per unit.

What each band actually costs

The exact rate varies slightly by DisCo, but under NERC's current tariff order (effective December 2025), Band A customers pay somewhere around ₦200–225 per kWh. Band B drops to roughly ₦60–63 per kWh. Bands C, D, and E are lower still, generally in the ₦40–50 per kWh range.

That's a big gap. A Band A household using the same amount of power as a Band E household can pay four to five times more per unit — in exchange for supply that's supposed to be far more reliable.

A household getting reclassified without warning

Here's a situation we hear about often: a household on Band C for years suddenly finds itself moved to Band B, with no change in behaviour on their part. That happens when a DisCo upgrades the feeder infrastructure in that area — more consistent hours, but a new, higher price band attached automatically.

You don't get a vote. The band follows the feeder, not the household.

Can you just ask to move to a cheaper band?

Honestly, no — not directly. Your band is tied to the physical feeder line serving your neighbourhood, not a plan you choose from a menu. If your DisCo hasn't invested in that feeder, you can't opt into Band A supply even if you wanted to pay for it. And if your area gets upgraded, you can't opt out of the higher band that comes with it.

That's the part people find most frustrating — the band is decided for you, and it can change.

Why your band matters less once you add solar

This is the honest upside: solar and battery don't erase your band, but they make it far less relevant to your day-to-day comfort. Whether you're Band A paying a premium for 20 hours, or Band E getting only 4, a correctly sized solar + battery system covers the gap the grid leaves — outages, low-voltage hours, or just the hours your band doesn't guarantee.

You're still on the grid. You still have a band. But your lights, fridge, and router stop caring which one it is.
